Snorkeling & Island Hopping
It’s possible to go on a snorkeling day trip to the islands around Koh Lanta. Typically, this is visiting Ko Ngai and Ko Mook (sometimes called the 4 Islands Tour) but it’s also possible to visit Koh Kradan, Ko Phi-Phi and Koh Haa. You have lots and lots of options if you want to go snorkeling:
Speedboat. These boats are deceptively large, and you’ll typically be joining a group of around 25-30 other people.
Longtail. This more traditional laidback option can be a lot of fun. You can join a group of around 10-16 people as part of a shared boat trip or for a truly unforgettable day, charter your own private longtail for the day and go on your own watery adventure. Again, we can help with this.
Diveboats. It's entirely possible to go snorkeling with one of the various dive companies around the island. You get the advantage of a fancy fully equipped dive boat, tasty food, and scuba-diving quality equipment for snorkeling. It's also one of the easier ways to go snorkeling at Ko Haa, as most longtails don’t go there from Lanta. Any dive center on the island will be happy to have you aboard. It can also be a great way to show non-diving friends or family what they are missing out on, while getting to see some fantastic marine life from the surface!
Most companies offer pickup and drop off from your accommodation.
If you approach the boatmen hanging out at the end of the Old Town pier there are usually plenty of boat captains happy to take you to Koh Ngai and Koh Mook, or the islands East of Koh Lanta such as Koh Bubu and Talabeng. For the best value for money, arrange a full day trip the day before and aim to leave around 8:00 - 9:00am, returning at approximately 4pm. Prices vary, but expect to spend around ฿6,000 – ฿10,000 for a boat for the day. Again, not all boats carry insurance, so please be careful and we can help with this to help ensure you have a carefree day.
Ko Lanta is an extremely popular scuba diving destination. Although there is no scuba diving direct on Ko Lanta, some of the best dive sites in Thailand are a short boat trip away. Because of this, pretty much all diving excursions are a full day trip on a boat. Most dive trips leave Koh Lanta around 8am and return between 4pm and 6pm depending on the dive sites visited.
Some of the most popular destinations are:
- Koh Haa
- Koh Phi-Phi
- Koh Rok
- Hin Daeng & Hin Muang
Ko Lanta is a very popular destination for people wishing to learn to scuba dive or further their dive experience with additional PADI qualifications. If you wish to learn to dive, a PADI Open Water course typically takes 4 days, including 2 days diving around Koh Lanta's famous dive sites.
There are numerous dive companies on the island, standards are typically excellent with well-equipped dive boats, good equipment, and very experienced diving staff, divemaster’s and instructors.
Whether you are an experienced diver or want to learn to dive for the first time we recommend Lanta Diver in Saladan (directly across from Lanta Mart). The other we would recommend is Nice Dive, also located in Saladan, just up the road from Lanta Diver. These 5-star PADI dive schools are in the northwest of Koh Lanta meaning you have shorter travel times to most of the dive sites around Ko Lanta.
